Our students study Alternative Dispute Resolution with leading faculty and practitioners through Cardozo’s renowned clinics and courses. The Program is home to the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution and sponsors an annual symposium on critical issues in domestic and international dispute resolution.
Gloria Steinem Receives 22nd International Advocate for Peace Award
In the early evening on March 29, 2023, nearly two hundred Cardozo students and community members gathered as Gloria Steinem was presented the 22nd International Advocate for Peace (IAP) Award. The award was presented to Ms. Steinem by Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution Editor-in-Chief John Dellamore ‘23 and Symposium Editor Nicholas Beudert ‘23.

Professor Schneider Gives the Philip B. Blank Memorial Lecture on Attorney Ethics
Professor Andrea Kupfer Schneider gave the 2023 Philip B. Blank Memorial Lecture on Attorney Ethics at Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University on March 1, 2023. The lecture, entitled “The Conflict in Arbitrator Conflict of Interest Disclosures: Public Judges or Private Neutrals?,” covered the ethical responsibilities of arbitrators, highlighted recent cases considering arbitrator disqualification, identified unanswered questions regarding arbitrator ethics, and recommended possible reforms to ethical rules for arbitrator disclosures and disqualification.

Cardozo Securities Arbitration Clinic Students Present to the SEC
On March 29, 2023 the Cardozo Securities Arbitration Clinic students presented to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission at an event entitled, "Investor Advocacy Clinics: Students Fight for Investor Justice." During the presentation, Cardozo students David Fleschner ‘23, Kayla Gonik ‘23, Grace Huang ‘24, Max Kleiner ‘24, Zaira Rojas-Navarro ‘24, Rita Tewolde ‘24, Aryan Vavila ‘23, AJ Wei ’23 engaged in conversations with SEC staff and commissioners about their ongoing cases and highlighted the areas of concern that impact the lower-income and middle-income retail investors.

Stories Mediators Tell in Paris
Professor Lela Porter Love led an event based on her book Stories Mediators Tell: World Edition during the ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition in Paris, France, on February 10, 2023.
The event featured mediators-turned-story-tellers Jeremy Lack (Switzerland), Claude Amar (France), Orit Asnin (Israel), Catherine Davidson (Australia), Diego Faleck (Brazil), and Fidana Alieva (Kyrgyz Republic), who each shared stories from their respective mediation practices. The stories highlighted the challenges, joys, frustrations and commonalities of working as mediators in different parts of the world.
The ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition brings together 120 professional mediators and academics and more than 250 students and coaches from forty-seven universities around the world. Cardozo Law Students Chloe Canaan ’24, Lisa Mordkovich ’24, Sabrina Clifford ’24, and Diana Miller ’24 participated in this year’s competition.

New Applications for Negotiation Theory: Hybrid Warfare
On November 18, 2022, the Cardozo Journal for Conflict Resolution hosted a symposium entitled “Negotiation Strategies for War by Other Means.” Academics and practitioners in the fields of dispute resolution, national security, and cyber security came together to explore the changing landscape of international conflicts and the role that dispute resolution can play in strengthening the capacity to respond effectively to hybrid warfare attacks. The symposium was inspired by the work of Project Seshat, a group of negotiation experts with a variety of scholarly and practical backgrounds in business, law, sociology, and law enforcement.

From Bologna to San Diego, Big Achievements for Cardozo ADR CHS
The Cardozo ADR Competition Honor Society (ADRCHS) led by, Editor-in-Chief, Ilona Ehrlich, competed in twelve international and national dispute resolution competitions during the 2022-2023 academic year. Some highlights include:
- Ilona Ehrlich ’23, Megan Bishop ’24, and Diana Miller ’24 traveled to Bologna, Italy for the International Law School Mediation Tournament. The team won first Place Overall for Advocate-Client Team and Megan Bishop ’24 received a Top Place Individual Mediator Award.
- Chole Canaan ’24 and Joshua Weiner ’24, placed second at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law National Sports Law Negotiation Competition in San Diego, California.
- Noah Agnew ’24 won 1st Place for Best Individual Oralist at the XI Rio Pre-Moot.
- Chloe Canaan ’24 and Yonatan Raskin ’24 won 1st place at the inaugural Cardozo Invitational Negotiation on Entertainment, Media and Art

Cardozo ADR CHS Launches CINEMA, a New Entertainment, Media and Art Negotiation Competition
On March 26, 2023 ADRCHS hosted the inaugural Cardozo Invitational Negotiation on Entertainment, Media and Art (“CINEMA”) in partnership with the Cardozo Center for Fashion, Art, Media & Entertainment Law (“FAME”). The competition consists of three rounds of negotiation on issues centered around arts, media, and entertainment, and student participants received feedback from attorneys from companies including L’Oréal, Beanstalk, Sesame Workshop, NBC Universal, A+E Networks, William Morris Endeavor, Warner Music Group, Prime Video & Amazon, Paramount.

Back to in Person Competition at the Vis Moot in Vienna
The Cardozo Vis Moot Team Noah Agnew ’24, Judzia Bryant ’24, Sydney Clarke ’24, and Sarah Igarashi ’24 along with student coach Se Won Park ’23 and faculty coach Professor Peter Halprin traveled to Vienna, Austria to compete in the 30th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Competition.

A Banner Year for The Cardozo Dispute Resolution Society
Under the leadership of co-presidents Olivia Huey ’24 and Se Won Park ’23, the Cardozo Dispute Resolution Society (“CDRS”) hosted several events for Cardozo students to learn from dispute resolution practitioners throughout the 2022-2023 academic year.

CJCR Journal and Blog Highlights
The Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution published Volume 24:1 which includes articles by:
Yael Efron and Mohammed S. Wattad exploring the conflict surrounding the legal status of Arabic in Israel; Joseph Crupi discussing the potential for inclusiveness in the legislative negotiation process; Daniel Castelo Branco Ramos analyzing the Brazilian legal frameworks of environmental dispute resolution (“EDR”); Ava J. Abramowitz suggesting that we should look to other fields, such as sales, to make more progress in understanding mediator effectiveness.

Alumni Spotlight
Cai Phillips-Jones '22 (upper left) is the new Civil Court Coordinator at the New York Peace Institute. Cai works as a case manager in the NYPI civil court program, assists with providing mediation for cases that would otherwise end up in litigation, and mediates cases as needed.
Maurice Q. Robinson '09 (bottom right) was selected for the 2022-2023 class of JAMS Diversity Fellows. Maurice is the assistant director of workforce diversity and equal opportunity compliance at The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and is an adjunct professor of negotiation at Cardozo Law.
Federica Romanelli '20 (bottom left) is the Administrator for The New York County Lawyers’ Association, Part 137 Attorney-Client Fee Dispute Resolution Program for the 1st and 12th Judicial District in New York. Federica is also a mediator and arbitrator and received her Law Degree from Università Statale di Milano with a focus on European law. She earned an LL.M. (Master of Laws) in Dispute Resolution and Advocacy from Cardozo.
Lara Traum '16 (upper right) co-authored a newly published book entitled, “Effectively Representing Clients in Family Mediation.” The book is designed to serve as a practical guide for advocates representing clients in divorce and family mediation.
