Our students study Alternative Dispute Resolution with leading faculty and practitioners through Cardozo’s renowned clinics and courses. The Program is home to the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution and sponsors an annual symposium on critical issues in domestic and international dispute resolution.
Envisioning A Multidoor Criminal Courthouse
On October 27, 2023, the Cardozo Journal for Conflict Resolution hosted a symposium where scholars and practitioners came together to answer the question, “How Should a Multidoor Criminal Courthouse Operate?” Speakers explored the role of judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, crime victims, defendants, and the public in this new future. The keynote address was given by Courtney Bryan, executive director of the Center for Justice Innovation. The day-long program, was organized into three distinct panels, during which scholars presented their articles, and a mix of scholars and practitioners were asked to respond with their commentary. Two Cardozo Students Win ADR Writing Prizes
Taylor Trefger, ’23 (right) won the 2023 Journal of Dispute Resolution/National Academy of Arbitrators Student Writing Competition for her article entitled, “Exempting the FMLA From Forced Arbitration: The Need for Special Consideration of Pregnant and Working Mothers to Achieve Gender Equality in the Workplace.” Trefger’s article will be published in the Summer 2024 issue.
Halle Jaffee ’24 (left) won the second-place prize in the 2023 American Journal of National Dispute Resolution Writing Competition for her article, “Mending Mediations in New York: Child-Inclusive Mediation as a means of Finding the Child’s Voice in the Absence of the Child.”
Cardozo LL.M. Students Reach Semi-Finals in International Commercial & Investment Arbitration Moot in Washington, D.C
Danielle Haziza, LL.M. '24, Lola Costello Vilardell, LL.M. '24, Ines Ayadi, LL.M. '24, and Victor Lépine Juárez, LL.M. '24, represented Cardozo at the LL.M. International Commercial & Investment Arbitration Moot Competition organized by the Washington College of Law Center on International Commercial Arbitration. The team was coached by Caterina Cesario, LL.M. ’23, and Alejandro Martínez Sanchez, LL.M. ’23.

Professor Lela Love (bottom middle) gave the keynote address at the conference “Alternative Dispute Resolution and Access to Justice" (Brazil), organized by the Institute of Lawyers of San Paulo and the U.S. Embassy. She was also a panelist for the conference "Mediation: A Sleeping Beauty” (Doha), organized as a part of the Sleeping Beauty Conference Series by the HBKU College of Law, and a trainer in the Advanced Mediation Training for the Mediators of the Office of the Ombudsman for United Nations Funds and Programmes. Professor Hillary Packer (bottom right) presented on Restorative Justice in the Courts, at the New York State Dispute Resolution Annual Conference. (October 2023) The panel focused on restorative justice, a paradigm and set of practices inspired by indigenous traditions, which is increasingly used to respond to harm. Additionally, Professor Packer’s work was featured in a New York Times article about her initiative, “Circles for Safe Streets,” which aims to allow car crash victims and drivers to bridge the communication gap between all the people involved in a car crash using restorative justice techniques.
Kukin Program Launches Two New Classes: Dispute Systems Design and International Investment Arbitration
The new class Dispute Systems Design focuses on the study and practice of dispute systems design and provides students with tools to understand the structure and design choices made by organizations to resolve disputes. This includes examination of court processes and other government or private systems for managing conflict. This class is taught by Professor Dan Weitz, who is the Director of the Division of Professional & Court Services for the New York State Unified Court System.
Professor Katie Gonzalez, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, and Professor Santiago Gatica, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer have joined forces to teach a new course on International Investment Arbitration at Cardozo.
ADR Competition Honor Society Updates
On November 12, 2023, the Cardozo ADR Competition Honor Society hosted its Second Annual Cardozo Invitational Negotiation on Entertainment, Media & the Arts (CINEMA). The competition simulates entertainment and intellectual property negotiations in which law students, acting as lawyers, manage a series of legal problems relating to real-life scenarios. The competition hosted 31 teams from law schools throughout the U.S. More than 70 entertainment and intellectual property lawyers participated as judges. Patrick J. Murphy, III (JAMS) was the final round judge.

Fall 2023 Student Achievements
Diana Miller, '24 (left), was selected for the 2023 Federal Bar Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Section Law Student Scholarship. This scholarship selects a law student who has demonstrated a commitment to ADR and intends to pursue the field upon graduation to make a meaningful contribution to the profession and society.
Naomie Muijinga Malumba, LL.M. ’24 (right), was selected to participate in the Arbitration Moot Competition organized by CPR and the Steering Committee of the Africa Arbitration Day - New York and held on December 8, 2023, at the New York City Bar Association.
Hearing from the Experts
The Cardozo Dispute Resolution Society (CDRS) hosted its Inaugural Arbitration Day on September 12, 2023. Members of CDRS organized an event for students to learn about the arbitration process, current trends, and career pathways in the field. Speakers included Jeffrey Zaino, Vice-President of AAA-ICDR, Betsy Hellmann, Arbitration Counsel at Skadden, Charles Moxley, Arbitrator from Moxley ADR, and Luis Martinez, Vice-President ICDR. The event concluded with a networking reception where students networked with Cardozo alumni in the arbitration field.

Cardozo Divorce Mediation Clinic Turns Thirteen
This fall the Cardozo Divorce Mediation Clinic celebrated its 13th anniversary with a “Bar Mitzvah” honoring the clinic director Professor Robert Collins. Professor Collins has practiced divorce mediation for more than 40 years, and is considered one of the pioneers of divorce mediation in New York. He served as a founder and president of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York and as chair of the Ethics Committee of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation.
Mediation Clinic Faculty Spotlight: Professor Holly Weiss
Professor Weiss is an adjunct clinical professor for the Cardozo Mediation Clinic. Professor Weiss supervises mediation clinic students in New York City Small Claims and Civil Courts and employment discrimination matters pending before the EEOC.

Caterina Cesario, LL.M. ’23, was selected for the 2024 ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Fellowship and will serve on the Arbitration Committee.
Xènia Campàs Gené, LL.M. ‘23, was selected to serve on the NextGen Committee of the Sports Lawyers Association. The Sports Lawyers Association is a non-profit, international, professional organization whose common goal is the understanding, advancement, and ethical practice of sports law.
Serena Lee ’05 was appointed the President and CEO of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
Dadriana Lepore, LL.M. ’11, in addition to her practice in family law, domestic relations matters, and mediation, teaches Family Law and Divorce Mediation at Roger Williams Law School in Rhode Island.
Alejandro Martínez Sanchez, LL.M. ’23, was selected for the Young ITA Mentorship Program. The Young ITA promotes the involvement of young professionals (under 40) in the international arbitration community through programs, publications, and other activities. Also, Martínez was chosen as one of the professors for a postgraduate degree in international investments offered by the Barcelona Bar Association, and as the Kukin Teaching Fellow for the International Investment Arbitration class.
Se Won Park, ’23, joined the International Dispute Resolution/International Arbitration Practice Group at Shin & Kim.
Glen Parker, ’10 and LL.M. ‘11 was appointed Assistant Deputy Chief Appellate Court Attorney and oversaw two ADR programs at the Appellate Division, 2nd Department in the New York State Unified Court System.
