This fall, the Cardozo Divorce Mediation Clinic celebrated its 13th anniversary with a “Bar Mitzvah” honoring the clinic director, Professor Robert Collins. Professor Collins has practiced divorce mediation for more than 40 years and is considered one of the pioneers of divorce mediation in New York. He served as a founder and president of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York and as chair of the Ethics Committee of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation.
The Cardozo Divorce Mediation Clinic provides services to divorcing couples referred by Supreme Court Judges sitting in matrimonial parts and community dispute resolution centers. Students co-mediate with the professor at the start of the semester; they progress to working in student co-mediation teams, and eventually have the opportunity to mediate solo under faculty supervision. Since its establishment in 2010, approximately 250 students have assisted over 550 couples in navigating the process of marital separation and have contributed an estimated $1,500,000 in legal services to the City.
Divorce Mediation Clinic alumni, current students, and Kukin Program faculty were in attendance, and Dean Melanie Leslie, Professor Andrea Schneider, and Professor Collins gave remarks.
