Any of the names of Hashem (God) 

Sefer Torah or Sefer Torah cover (Torah scroll or Torah scroll cover) 

Seforim (Jewish religious books), whether handwritten, printed, photocopied, or downloaded and printed (e.g., Chumashim (Jewish Bibles), Siddurim (prayer books), Machzorim (festival prayer books), Talmud, Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish law), etc.) 

Benchers (Grace after meals pamphlets) 

Pages of a sefer (Jewish religious book), that became detached or fragments of a sefer, even if there is no writing or print on them 

A sefer’s cover that has been removed from the sefer 

Binding tape that became detached from a sefer 

Printed material primarily intended to quote or explain Torah, even when containing non-Torah portions. This includes Mishnah, Midrash, Talmud, Rishonim or Acharonim, Jewish religious commentaries), and any three consecutive words of a verse from the Bible that have been written on one line, with the intention of quoting Torah  

Homework and test papers in Jewish religious subjects when containing any of the above 

Material written or printed in English or any other language if they conform with the above (material written or printed in Hebrew are not sheimos if they do not conform with the above) 

Halachic (Jewish legal) and other Torah material  

Tefillin or tefillin bag (phylacteries – two small leather boxes with straps containing religious texts) 

Mezuzah or mezuzah cover 

A clearly marked sheimos collection box will be placed in a designated area in the alcove behind the circulation desk in the Chutick Law Library. Individuals will be allowed access to that area after speaking with the circulation desk staff and asking for access. 

The boxes will be clearly labeled in Hebrew and English and with instructions regarding acceptable materials. 

All individuals are responsible for placing sheimos in the designated collection boxes. 

Sheimos should not be placed in regular trash receptacles, recycled, or treated in a disrespectful manner. 

When handling sheimos, individuals should treat them with respect and avoid placing them on the floor or in other undignified locations. 

Designated Chutick Law Library personnel will perform periodic examination of contents of receptacle and discard items which do not qualify as sheimos. 

Disposal will be arranged by designated Chutick Law Library personnel charged with this responsibility by contacting Wilf Campus Production Services and arranging for pick up.  

The sheimos will be picked up once a year, or when the box is full, in a sealed box and sent to Wilf Campus Production Services for burial; box should be clearly labeled: “SHEIMOS FOR BURIAL” 

Collected sheimos will be disposed of in accordance with halakhic guidelines, typically through burial in a designated cemetery or through genizah (storage for eventual burial). 

Post announcement of sheimos service in the minyan room, student lounge, copy rooms, and other bulletin board areas. 

Post policy and procedures at the Chutick Law Library website. 

Send notice to stakeholders (students, faculty, staff) to announce sheimos service, clearly describing placement of receptacle. 

This information will be included in student orientations and faculty/staff training. 

The Head of Reference and Faculty Services of the Chutick Law Library will be responsible for overseeing the implementation and enforcement of this policy. 

They will ensure that collection boxes are properly maintained and that sheimos are disposed of in a timely and appropriate manner. 

This policy will be reviewed and updated periodically to ensure its effectiveness and compliance with halakhic guidelines.
