The Marshall Project reported on changes to solitary confinement practices and improvement of conditions at prisons around the country. Professor Betsy Ginsberg said the class action lawsuit she and several students filed back in March will continue despite the recent improvements to ensure conditions are “constitutionally adequate, properly implemented, and permanent.”

Luis Mancheno, teaching fellow in Cardozo's Immigration Justice Clinic, has been named one of NBC’s NBC Out #Pride30 innovators and changemakers. The Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic had a big victory this week when one of their clients, “Mr. L.,” a Jamaican national, won his quest to avoid deportation. He was facing the possibility of torture or death if he returned to Jamaica.

Alexandra Jarymowycz ’18, and Steven Ashur ’17, worked on the case beginning in September 2016. They appealed the deportation order that Mr. L. had received when represented by his previous attorney and won the appeal of that decision from the Board of Immigration Appeals in December 2016.

New York State will be the first in the nation to require lawyers for all immigrants facing deportation proceedings, and to ensure that no immigrant will be detained and permanently separated from his or her family solely because of the inability to afford a lawyer.

Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum, Cardozo’s newly appointed director of the Benjamin B. Ferencz Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention Clinic and Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, led a delegation to Germany last month to attend the First International Yazidi Women’s Conference organized by the Yazidi Women’s Council, the Kurdish Women’s Peace Office (Cenî), and the Platform for Struggle for Women Held in Captivity.
