The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion National Committee of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) has selected Cardozo 3L Anda Totoreanu to receive AILA’s DEI Law Student Scholarship this year. At Cardozo, Totoreanu and other students from the Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic represented a client who was deported decades ago on the basis of unjust—and as the students proved, unconstitutional—convictions. They filed a motion in state court and ultimately succeeded in vacating the unlawful convictions that led to their client’s deportation, and they filed a separate motion before the Board of Immigration Appeals that resulted in the vacatur of his deportation order. Through this work, they restored their client’s lawful status in the United States and have enabled him to return to his family and home. AILA’s DEI Law Student Scholarships are awarded annually and are intended to provide financial support and professional mentorship to law students from historically underrepresented groups who have demonstrated commitment in advocating on behalf of immigrant communities. Cardozo congratulates Totoreanu for this outstanding recognition.
