Join us for an insightful evening with Pieter van Os as he speaks about his book, Hiding in Plain Sight: How a Jewish Girl Survived Europe’s Heart of Darkness, in conversation with Professor Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum.
At this event, the author will share the extraordinary Holocaust survival story of an Orthodox Jewish woman who managed to escape persecution in wartime Poland by pretending to be a Catholic.
With her memoir and their interviews as a guide, van Os physically retraced Mala’s steps, through local archives and visiting remote villages, searching for anyone who might have known or helped her seventy-five years before. At times reading like an erudite detective story, this poignant, rich book is an engrossing meditation on what drives us to fear the “other”, and what in turn might allow us to feel compassion for them.
The session includes a Q&A with the author, and books are available for purchase now or at the event where the author will be signing copies.
Attendees are also invited to stay for a relaxed reception with refreshments. Limited spaces are available for the evening, so please register to guarantee your seat.
