Cardozo Law is pleased to welcome three accomplished scholars and advocates to its strong and growing faculty this summer: Assistant Professor of Law Mridula Raman, Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Civil Rights Clinic Stefen R. Short, and Harold A. Stevens Visiting Assistant Professor of Law Fregine Sheehy.
Mridula Raman joins Cardozo from Berkeley Law School, where she served as Deputy Director of the Death Penalty Clinic. A capital-defense lawyer, Raman has represented primarily death-sentenced prisoners in state post-conviction and federal habeas proceedings. Her work has included high-stakes litigation for clients under warrant of execution, clemency advocacy, and trial, appellate, and post-conviction representation in Alabama, Arizona, and Texas. Before joining Berkeley, Raman spent five years as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Capital Habeas Unit of the Office of the Federal Public Defender in Phoenix, Arizona. Earlier in her career, she clerked for Chief Judge Mary H. Murguia of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Judge Neil V. Wake of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. Raman earned her J.D. from Yale Law School and her undergraduate degree from Harvard College. At Cardozo, she will teach Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure.
Stefen R. Short comes to Cardozo from the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, where he served as Special Counsel for Disability Justice Projects, leading the Center’s efforts to protect and advance the rights of people with disabilities impacted by carceral systems. His advocacy has focused on the intersection of disability rights, racial justice, and economic justice. Prior to his work at the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, Short held leadership roles at Worth Rises and The Prisoners’ Rights Project of The Legal Aid Society, and served as a Staff Attorney at Disability Rights New York. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Albany Law School and his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Oswego. At Cardozo, Short will serve as Co-Director of the Civil Rights Clinic.
Fregine Sheehy joins Cardozo as the Harold A. Stevens Visiting Assistant Professor of Law. A bilingual African-Canadian lawyer called to the Bar in Ontario, Canada, Sheehy’s scholarship focuses on critical race and legal theory, human rights and anti-discrimination law, and evidence law. Sheehy earned her Bachelor of Social Sciences in Sociology and Women’s Studies, summa cum laude, and her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Ottawa. She also received an LL.M. from NYU School of Law and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in law at Osgoode Hall Law School. At Cardozo, she will teach Evidence.
