Brett Jones (They/Them) is the Charles E. Scheidt Human Rights Clinical Teaching Fellow in the Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention (HRAP) Clinic. Their research and scholarship focuses on issues of international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal, the rule of law, Indigenous rights, Tribal law in the United States, and sexual and gender-based violence. They have worked extensively on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) crisis in partnership with the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center and was a member of the Lenape Center’s Nichusak MMIW Working Group. Brett is the faculty coach for the Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition team.
Prior to joining Cardozo, Brett worked in Human Rights and Recruitment at Major League Soccer where they focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as it relates to recruitment and retainment efforts. They also were a teaching artist and Summer Conservatory Coordinator for the California Shakespeare Theatre, where they developed arts curriculum for Title I (underserved) and magnet schools in Oakland, Berkely, and Livermore, California.
Brett is a 2023 Cardozo alum, graduating cum laude, where they served as the Executive Editor of the Cardozo Arts and Entertainment Journal, Vol. 41. Brett also served as the Treasurer of OutLaw, Treasurer of the Minority Law Students Alliance, and the Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights (CLIHHR) Student Legal Fellow. They were the 2021 Boskey Restorative Justice Fellow and was a member of the HRAP Clinic focused on MMIP issues.
Brett is the recipient of the 2023 Telford Taylor Award for outstanding achievement in the field of Human Rights and the 2023 Richard H. Weisberg Writing Award for the best paper in Holocaust or Atrocity Prevention Studies. Brett also was the team leader for the inaugural Clara Barton International Humanitarian Law Competition team, which received the award of Best Application Brief.
