Sarah Chu, Director of Policy and Reform at Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo Law, joined advocates on Thursday, December 21, at Governor Kathy Hochul's NYC office, calling on the Governor to sign the Challenging Wrongful Convictions Act.
Recently passed by both houses of the New York State legislature, the legislation (S. 215 / A. 2878) would provide expanded opportunities to seek justice for those who have been wrongfully convicted.
The new law would provide the right to counsel for postconviction procedures; enable innocent people who pled guilty to qualify for postconviction review; create a procedure to review scientific evidence that contributed to a wrongful conviction when new information surfaces; allow for post-conviction discovery and remove procedural roadblocks to relief.
