Professor Ed Zelinsky wrote in Law360 on the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle’s taxation as a United States citizen living abroad. Despite her marriage into the British royal family, U.S. tax law still requires Markle to pay taxes since she earns above $105,900 annually.
“The U.S. thus taxes the income of a citizen living abroad only when that citizen both has high income and pays little or no income taxes to the nation in which she resides,” writes Zelinsky.
Many critics have targeted the U.S. for imposing such rules, but Zelinsky writes that many countries have similar laws for their foreign citizens and that the U.S. citizen tax law is not as unique or harsh as it appears.
