The Benjamin B. Ferencz Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention (HRAP) Clinic, along with the UNISINOS Human Rights Centre, conducted an environmental and human rights impact assessment for the indigenous population in Autazes, a municipality in the Brazilian Amazon. The indigenous Autazes group Mura face displacement due to a potash mine that is being considered for the area.
HRAP Director Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum, in partnership with Vale do Rio dos Sinos University and others, contributed to a study researching the planned Autazes mine’s risk.
Kestenbaum writes, "There is a lot of pressure now for this mining project to go forward without indigenous consultation - an obligation Brazil has under international law."
