It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Ryan Dorsett, a distinguished member of the Cardozo Class of 2021, died on July 10. Ryan, 26, was a fellow at the New York State Department of Financial Services, where he conducted investigations of insurance, banking and financial services violations and performed other critical services.
Ryan was a beloved member of the community who will be remembered as a thoughtful and dedicated student and a positive person who was unfailingly generous to his classmates. He served as a legal writing teaching assistant and as the senior editor for the Moot Court Honor Society. He also participated in the Department of Financial Services Field Clinic and clerked for United States District Court, Eastern District of New York through the Alexander Fellows Program. Ryan was the founder and president of the student Antitrust Society. After graduating in 2021, he accepted an Excelsior Service Fellowship with the New York Department of Financial Services.
Growing up in Wilton Manors, Florida, Ryan participated in numerous sports and extracurricular activities. He loved music, video games and cooking. At an early age, Ryan expressed his desire to pursue law and competed in national and state speech, debate, and forensic competitions during high school and college.
Ryan received his B.A. from the University of Central Florida in 2018, majoring in political science with a minor in finance. He participated on the mock trial team and the Moot Court Association. He also was a volunteer note-taker for students with learning disabilities and writing impairments.
Ryan was social and charismatic, intelligent and driven, giving, and a great friend to many. He cared about Cardozo as an institution and volunteered often to help with activities that advanced the school. He touched the lives of so many people.
Ryan leaves behind his mother, Danielle, and stepfather, Joseph Jarmy, his father, Mark Dorsett, his sister, Lauren, and three grandmothers, Anne Lawrence, Ricki Witte and Janice Dorsett, along with many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
A remembrance mass will be held on Saturday, July 22 at 11 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus – St. Gregory The Great, Amsterdam Avenue and West 96th Street.
