Santiago Gatica is a Senior Associate in the International Arbitration Group of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer US LLP in New York. His practice focuses on commercial and investor-State arbitration. He has advised clients in a wide variety of sectors, including telecommunications, financial services, energy, infrastructure, mining, agribusiness and airport services, and has acted in arbitrations under the ICC, LCIA, CIETAC, ICSID, ICSID Additional Facility and UNCITRAL rules, both in English and Spanish.
Santiago also teaches international arbitration in graduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Montevideo and frequently writes and speaks on relevant topics of commercial and investor-State arbitration. Santiago is also actively involved in several arbitration organizations, including as member of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution-American Arbitration Association (ICDR-AAA) Young & International (Y&I) Board and as vice-chair of the Inter Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) Cross-Border Investment Committee (CBIC), among others.
Who’s Who Legal recognizes Santiago as a “Future Leader in International Arbitration” since 2023 and as one of the six “Most Highly Regarded” North American practitioners for 2024. In 2023, Santiago was also recognized as one of the six “Rising Stars in International Arbitration” by Law 360 and included by Lawdragon in the inaugural edition of its “500 X – The Next Generation Guide”.
He graduated as a lawyer from the University of Montevideo and obtained his Master of Laws (LLM) at Harvard Law School. Before joining Freshfields, Santiago worked at leading law firms in Uruguay and China, advising international clients in different areas, including M&A, litigation, arbitration and large construction and renewable energy projects. Santiago is admitted to practice law in the State of New York and Uruguay.
