The Center for Real Estate Law & Policy
The Center for Real Estate Law & Policy is Cardozo’s focal point for the study of real estate law and a center for vital discussion of major issues in the nation’s largest real estate market and beyond.
The center’s faculty consists of prominent scholars and highly successful practitioners. Professor Stewart Sterk, the center's director, is one of the ten most-cited property professors in the United States and a leading real estate expert.
Students have the opportunity to take courses in various aspects of real estate law, participate in enriching externships, and attend events featuring top practitioners on various timely topics.
The program includes:
- Curricular offerings include Real Estate Transactions, Environmental Law, Taxation of Real Estate Transactions, Bankruptcy, Alternative Business Entities and Real Estate Contract Drafting
- A robust real estate externship program launched in January 2016.
- A nationally recognized faculty composed of prominent scholars and highly successful practitioners
- The Stephen B. Siegel Program in Real Estate Law, which supports curriculum, publications and academic research
- The New York Real Estate Law Reporter, a monthly survey of the most important real estate cases decided in New York. It provides concise summaries of court decisions alongside analysis written by students and articles by leading practitioners and scholars on topics of current importance to real estate lawyers.

Meet Our Director
Professor Stewart Sterk, H. Bert and Ruth Mack Professor of Real Estate Law
Professor Sterk has written widely on property and real estate issues. He is the co-editor of a leading casebook on land use law, and he is the editor of the New York Real Estate Law Reporter. A member of the American Law Institute, he served as an advisor in the preparation of the Restatement (Third) of Property (Servitudes).
Professor Sterk has been awarded “Best Professor” or “Best First-Year Professor” at Cardozo Law 11 times.

Externships
The center encourages students to learn by doing in addition to classroom work. Cardozo’s real estate externship program places students in for-credit positions at several law firms and real estate investment firms. Externs work in their placements for 10-15 hours per week and also participate in a seminar that explores issues relating to real estate practice.
