Dean Melanie Leslie has announced that former Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Vanita Gupta will be the graduation speaker at the Cardozo School of Law 2017 commencement ceremony, which will take place on May 24 at 6 p.m. at David Geffen Hall in New York City's Lincoln Center.

Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum, Cardozo’s newly appointed director of the Benjamin B. Ferencz Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention Clinic and Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, led a delegation to Germany last month to attend the First International Yazidi Women’s Conference organized by the Yazidi Women’s Council, the Kurdish Women’s Peace Office (Cenî), and the Platform for Struggle for Women Held in Captivity.

The Cardozo Civil Rights Clinic, along with co-counsel, filed a class action lawsuit March 29 on behalf of all death row prisoners at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Death row prisoners at Angola spend 23 hours every day in extreme isolation. They are kept in windowless cells that measure eight feet by ten feet, and are allowed out of their cells for only one hour each day. Three times a week, the prisoners may use part of their one hour to go alone into a small, unshaded outdoor cage, resembling a dog pen, that does not provide the basic space or equipment for exercise.
