Omar Mualimmak spent more than 2000 days in solitary confinement. He was the keynote speaker at a day-long conference at Cardozo Law called "Life in the Box." Mualimmak sat down with Cardozo Law to discuss his prison experience, and specifically how New York State administers solitary confinement.

A week after the conference, in a sweeping agreement in which Cardozo professor Alex Reinert served as co-counsel, the New York Civil Liberties Union and the New York State Department of Community Corrections announced an end to solitary confinement in New York State’s prisons for youth, pregnant inmates, developmentally disabled, and intellectually challenged prisoners.
