Immigration Justice Clinic Wins Freedom for Client Facing Deportation

The Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic had a big victory this week when one of their clients, “Mr. L.,” a Jamaican national, won his quest to avoid deportation. He was facing the possibility of torture or death if he returned to Jamaica.

Alexandra Jarymowycz ’18, and Steven Ashur ’17, worked on the case beginning in September 2016. They appealed the deportation order that Mr. L. had received when represented by his previous attorney and won the appeal of that decision from the Board of Immigration Appeals in December 2016.

Jocelyn Getgen Kestenbaum, Cardozo’s newly appointed director of the Benjamin B. Ferencz Human Rights and Atrocity Prevention Clinic and Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, led a delegation to Germany last month to attend the First International Yazidi Women’s Conference organized by the Yazidi Women’s Council, the Kurdish Women’s Peace Office (Cenî), and the Platform for Struggle for Women Held in Captivity.

The NY Times: Federal Lawsuit Filed by Cardozo's Civil Rights Clinic and Other Organizations Challenges Solitary Confinement

Three death row prisoners filed a complaint in a federal class action lawsuit on behalf of all death row prisoners at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. The lawsuit seeks to reform the prison’s policy that automatically places all prisoners sentenced to death — even those who cannot be executed under current Supreme Court standards — in prolonged isolation for the entirety of their incarceration and with no opportunity to challenge their placement.
