Cardozo Law students Anthony Faranda ’16, Dara Gell ’16 and Sophia Gurulé ’17 traveled to Boston on Friday, February 19, where Gurulé argued a summary judgment motion at the U.S. District Court on behalf of the Immigration Justice Clinic's client. The three represent the client under the supervision of clinical teaching fellow Andrea Sáenz.

The New York Times - Jessica A. Roth, a former federal prosecutor who teaches at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, said that because the recommendations of the probation office, the prosecution and the defense can have “an anchoring effect” on a judge, there may be “a strategic benefit” for the defense to seek probation, to try to “set that anchor low.”

The News Tribune - “Assuming it’s true, it’s unethical, a misuse of power and an indictable offense,” said Ellen Yaroshefsky, a professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City. She directs ethics courses within the school and consults on legal ethics for other organizations, including the American Bar Association.

In New York City, an immigration public defender system developed in conjunction with Cardozo Law School and funded by the New York City Council attempts to address this problem by providing legal assistance to detainees through the Bronx Defenders, Brooklyn Defender Services and the Legal Aid Society.
